The solutions company companies

In the last 2-3 months there have been a number of workshops and conferences that between them have covered the broad expanse of the digital publishing industry. From Milia in Cannes, focused on entertainment, to EBIC in Rome focussed on business information, all have resonated to the cry of "We shall be the solutions company"voiced by large corporations. At EBIC the CEO/President of the Thompson Corporation said in his keynote speech: "We need to get the right information to the right people at the right time with the right applications software, to enable clients to make the right decisions".

This admirable sentiment is however also the current battle cry of the mobile communications industry (think WAP), the consultancy world (think Accenture), the software producers such as Microsoft (think .net), Internet broadcasters, the traditional publishers and of course the fledgling ASP and P2P businesses. It is no doubt even the cry of the "Public Library of Science" supporters who aim to disrupt the STM publishing business. Is it though, what the users want?
