The European Commission has launched an online consultation on a working document outlining a possible legal instrument on the re-use of public sector information within the Community. The working document and the underlying documents can be found at their web site.

Artlink together with Sotheby's have launched a web and CD promotion of their International Young Art 2002 Auction. Artlink specialises in the promotion of International Young Artist and together with Sothebys launch a yearly auction in several locations around the world. The web and CD promotion where developed and designed by 3dmuse.com, an architecturally based company specialising in the research and development of virtual environments.

The Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University has selected product lifecycle management (PLM) software from EDS PLM Solutions to support its mechanical design automation curriculum. Kyoto University will deploy 100 seats of Solid Edge, the leading mid-range mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD) system, within its digital engineering learning environment. "Our students have a very high interest and expectation for 3D CAD education at Kyoto University," said Dr. Atsushi Matsubara, associate professor at the Department of Precision Engineering within the Faculty. "They also have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a great enthusiasm to master new technology in a very short time frame."

181.04 Healthcare: 3D Models
A.D.A.M. Inc has signed a content licensing agreement with Tenet Healthcare Corporation under which both English and Spanish versions of A.D.A.M.'s core health information products will be available on Tenet hospital web sites. Products included in the license agreement are A.D.A.M.'s Health Illustrated Encyclopaedia, its new Body Guide product, Surgeries & Procedures, and the new version of its interactive pregnancy guide. Spanish versions of both the Encyclopedia and Surgeries & Procedures product were also included. A.D.A.M.'s proprietary content assets include an illustrated 3,800 topic medical encyclopedia; topical health centers; 40,000 medical illustrations; 3D models; animations; and interactive tools and technology.

181.05 Visualization Users Announced include Shell, Statoil
High-performance visualization is increasingly important to geoscientists and engineers constructing models of subsurface structures, drilling targets and well trajectories to efficiently drain the reservoirs and only six months after launching its first product, Cyviz has announced users including Shell, Statoil, Agip, Hydro, Technoguide and Roxar. CYVIZ is also making it possible for Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Saab Automobile VW and Dassault Systems to review 3D simulations of their products collaboratively and demonstrate 3D simulations of their products at trade shows.

At IBEX in Florida, USA from February 6 to 8, Joe Petrich, senior designer from Delta Marine, and Jim Payant, from Janicki Machine, will present their techniques for using 3D models and CNC machining to create molds and plugs and discuss how using digital technology has changed their building process. Geometrix has announced its FaceVision 3D Identification System family of products, offering fully-automatic 3D imaging of human faces for facial recognition systems, 3D "mug shots", fraud-resistant identification documents, and passenger screening systems. The low-cost FaceVision 200 Series 3D Identification System provides 3D imaging of the critical frontal region of the face, while the higher-end FaceVision 600 Series 3D Identification System extracts ear-to-ear 3D images. The FaceVision 200 Series 3D Identification System is claimed to be the world's lowest cost, biometrically accurate 3D face capture solution for forensic and security applications where field-portability is essential. The FaceVision 200 Series 3D Identification System consists of two standard, adjacently mounted, digital cameras plus lighting, tripod, background panel, calibration target, and software for processing the images into 3D models automatically. Softimage has announced workflow-enhancing products for its SOFTIMAGE|XSI nonlinear animation (NLA) system and other third-party animation products. Autodesk has announced the Autodesk Inventor Series, a collection of 2D and 3D design applications that includes Autodesk Inventor 3D design software and Autodesk Mechanical Desktop, in one package. With this new offer, customers will continue to receive the functionality of Autodesk Mechanical Desktop software while gaining access to the 3D design system, Autodesk Inventor.

181.13 StereoGraphics Adds DDD's TriDef
StereoGraphics and DDD Group Plc, provider of 3D content creation, delivery and display solutions, have signed an agreement under which StereoGraphics will add DDD's TriDef 3D playback system into StereoGraphics' SynthaGram product line. In addition, the agreement enables DDD to offer the SynthaGram products to its customers desiring an eyewear-free 3D display. The SynthaGram combines a liquid crystal display panel, lenticular screen and graphics card with software to enable viewing in Stereo3D without special eyewear. DDD's TriDef 3D System enhances the SynthaGram by enabling the playback of stereoscopic 3D video, making it suitable for trade show and conference room presentations, entertainment and advertising, and 3D visualization. DDD also supplies 2D to 3D content conversion services, enabling existing content to be converted to 3D and viewed on the SynthaGram Monitor.

NewTek is shipping Video Toaster, a live video production environment for Windows 2000-based computer systems. The Video Toaster retails for $2995 and includes a real time nonlinear editor, live web streaming, character generation, 2D painting and compositing, 3D animation and effects, real time keying, video and audio processing.
181.16 Get Involved with OpenHSF
Thanks to Melle Amade-Vice of Tech Soft America for advising us that the OpenHSF Advisory Council inaugural meeting will be held in conjunction with Daratech Summit 2002 on February 27 in New York, USA. This meeting will be an important step in developing the OAC into a useful, functioning council, which will provide practical contribution to advancing the HSF format.

Kansei Corporation Advance Co Ltd has been awarded US Patent No 6339425 for: "A dial modeling device includes a three-dimensional model producing section for individually producing the three-dimensional model of plural indicators forming a dial, a rendering section for respectively projecting the data of the three-dimensional model of each indicator acquired in the three-dimensional model producing section on a two-dimensional plane, executing rendering by specifying a different light source every indicator and individually generating two-dimensional data for making each indicator look solid, an image storing section for storing the two-dimensional data generated in the rendering section of each indicator and an image synthesizing section for synthesizing the two-dimensional data of each indicator stored in the image storing section and the faced part of the dial."
181.19 People: X3D Technologies
Philippe Van Nedervelde has been appointed as Co-CEO of X3D Technologies Inc based in Florida, USA. X3D is the new entity into which the assets of the former JesterDigital were carried over. The company was founded by Michael Bay and John Textor. X3D recently deployed eye-catching i3D experiences for signature projects such as Disney Studios' blockbuster Pearl Harbor as well as for the world renowned rock band Metallica. Mr Van Nedervelde won the "Best Application" award at the VR World Congress 2001 in Barcelona for his presentation of the Virtual Munich Airport Center project. Prior to starting E-SPACES, Mr. Van Nedervelde founded the Genootschap voor Virtuele Realiteit (VR Society), and is currently the Executive Director for Europe of the Foresight Institute, a public education non-profit dedicated to nanotechnology. Mr. Van Nedervelde is fluent in five modern languages and presently learning his sixth.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Teesside invites VREfresh readers invites to the lecture, "Artificial Intelligence for Virtual Humans," to be given by Professor Marc Cavazza, Professor of Virtual Reality on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at the University campus in Middlesbrough at 6.30pm. This lecture will discuss two key problems in the development of intelligent virtual humans. The first consists in "doing the right thing", ie the correct choice of actions in context, which is the object of the sub-field of AI known as planning. The second is the understanding of human language, whether to accept instructions from humans, or to engage in conversations with them.
