Mechdyne has completed a large-scale visualization system for the United States Army Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. This system, which will be used for small-arms design and development, is among the world's first commercial installations of a rear-projected, curved-screen configuration, a design developed and marketed by Mechdyne. The arsenal will use the system's 3D imaging to create virtual prototypes of new small arms. The system's wraparound screen can also immerse users in virtual environments, enabling simulation applications for product evaluation purposes. This evaluation is carried out early in the design cycle, eliminating the need for costly physical fabrications and resulting in more effective and sustainable designs.
The system is also capable of supporting design eye-point applications in which the graphical perspective is optimized for the user's viewpoint. This capability provides the fidelity needed for applications such as target acquisition and tracking. The main display is powered by an SGI Onyx2â visualization supercomputer and features a high-fidelity surround-sound audio system to effectively recreate weapons simulations. A secondary display utilizing an ultra-bright projection system enables flat-screen business presentations.
VR project reports and demonstrations will form a significant element of VR World Congress V. Organizations planning to participate in projects supported by the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) will welcome the opportunity to identify prospective partners. They will also welcome an EC speaking note that says that the Commission wishes to simplify procedures under FP6. It has proposed a 'radical shift' in the current management model, with "more flexible rules and contracts and a substantive reduction of administrative red tape." This will include the abolishment of ex-ante financial controls and an end to the Commission requesting bank guarantees.
Deep Paint 3D With Texture Weapons will ship with integration for Rhinoceros from Robert McNeel & Associates. The new plug-in for Rhino, developed by Right Hemisphere, allows a direct connection to be established between Deep Paint 3D and Rhino software. This provides a new level of UV mapping, texturing and artistic control for users working with Rhino.
